I don’t do rocket science or brain surgery but I do do marketing. And one thing I have
come to believe is that if you want to be successful, you need to spend more time working on your business than working in it.
Now of course, I realise that there are things that you need to do day to day for your business in order for it to run. I am talking about the bigger picture, the planning and the vision.
A smart business owner will do what is required by their colleagues and clients and then spend time focussing on their overarching plan. Every day, they will move their business forwards. Some days it will only be a small increment but they never let their focus drop.
An average business owner will start with the best of intentions of concentrating on his plan. All too soon, however, he is derailed by the demands of others. Of course he is still working hard, but he is making no realistic progress. His ‘to do’ list just keeps getting longer and longer.
As with most things, there is a catchy phrase for this. ‘Plan our work and work our plan.’ Planning your work isn’t too hard but the second part is. However, that’s the bit that’s going to let your business grow.
