What are Free Website Builders?

by | Jun 22, 2022 | Knowledge Hub

Free website builders such as those offered by Wix, Yola, and Weebly appear as a godsend for many business owners. You will sign up for a free account, use a variety of tools to flesh out a website you might have envisioned for yourself previously. With a free account, you’ll also have access to a variety of free templates, but sticking with a free option might force you to host third party advertisement activity on your website. Alternatively, you can choose to pay for things such as a domain name, premium templates, or improved hosting.

Digging deeper

Of course, there’s a catch. ‘Free’ website builders off the free plan as a starter and then will inevitably try to rope you into other services that you might not want or even need. You’ll find that while you have invested a lot of time and effort into building out your free website, the end result is wholly inadequate and far from professional. At that point, you would have to either switch to a new service or upgrade, repeating the process all over again.

It doesn’t stop here. Not only will you be creating the website entirely by yourself, with no second-hand opinion, but there will also be:

  1. Limited number of webpages available

Many of the free website builders we come across will limit the exact number of webpages that you’re allowed to create. Some may only allow you to publish up to 5 pages per site!

  1. No domain name

Free builders will not allow you to use your own URL, something that is unbelievably important for attracting and retaining customers. The URL they assign you is a free one that typically consists of a business name plus their own personal URL.

  1. Website software branding

Free website builders will require that their branding is displayed on your own webpages. For example, Wix’s free plan forces people to use branded badges that will direct users away from your website to theirs.

  1. Adverts

This is a big one. Many of these website builders will require that you have advertisement placed on your website, as it enables them to justify the ‘free’ aspect of your package. This kind of intrusive ad placement on your website will be detrimental to your perception from your customers.

  1. Limited or no customer support

If you’re having any issues building out your website, you’re basically on your own. Since you won’t get any customer support, this could be a real struggle.
